DPM 2010 protects highly available virtual machines (VM) implemented on Windows Server 08 R2 using Cluster Distributed Volumes (CSV) clusters in addition to standalone Hyper-V servers and Windows Machine 2008 Hyper-V clusters. To get all previously listed server configuration settings, DPM 2010 supports:
Smooth protection of Live Migrating VMs (For Windows Machine 2008 R2). DPM 2010 is LiveMigration aware and seamlessly protects a VM after it migrates to another node of the Hyper-V R2 cluster to another without manual treatment.
Item Level Recovery from host level backup. DPM 2010 supports item level recovery (ILR) which allows one to do körnig recovery of files and folders, volumes and digital hard disks (VHD) from a host level back up of Hyper-V VMs to a network share or a volume on a DPM protected server.
First Location Recovery. DPM 2010 supports online recovery of the protected VM to the first location.
Alternate Number Recovery. DPM 2010 facilitates alternate location recovery (ALR) that enables you to restore a Hyper-V VM to an alternate stand-alone or clustered Hyper-V host.
Notebook computer Protection
Although DPM 3 years ago SP1 was enabled for client protection, it was created for desktops rather than improved for mobile/often-disconnected user. DPM 2010 laptop feature is completely built from scuff while offering an improved experience for DPM Webmaster as well as the laptop user.
Seamless copies for roaming users (Backup over VPN, Backup when connected, Alert for SLA’s not met)
Rich support for folder inclusion/exclusion and file types exclusion Incorporation with local Shadow Replications for Vista & W7
Scales up to multitude of clients per DPM machine
Support for XP, Vis, and Win7
Reliability and Manageability
Additionally to features, this area has substantial investments in DPM 2010, with special recognition of the feedback from venture users who are implementing DPM across the large Windows farms within their heterogeneous environments.
Auto-Grow. This kind of feature will extend the replica volume as the production data grows.
Fewer Replica Inconsistent Errors and many of them will automatically get fixed by Auto-Rerun and Auto-CC (Consistency Check).
Flexibility and Strength to adapt for environment/configuration changes.
New Backup SLA Report that you can configure for your preferences and have it emailed every day. You can view it in the Protection View of the DPM UI, so no more custom pieces of software to determine if you have met your back up requirements.
Additional Enhancements
Exchange. DPM 2010 extends robust Exchange protection to Exchange 2010 DAG clusters.
SharePoint. To get SharePoint 2010, there is no recovery farm required for item level recoveries and backups are improved for large scale deployments.
SQL Server. DPM 2010 now includes is Instance-Level Protection and with Datasource Collocation, you can back-up SQL servers with ~700-800 DBs. DPM 2007 provided optimized SQL backups and with SQL End End user Recovery in DPM 2010, you should be capable to give the control back again to SQL Admin while retaining the storage advantages of DPM SQL backups.
Catastrophe Recovery replication (“DPM2DPM4DR”). Cyclic protection (DPM A DPM B) as well as chained (DPM A -> DPM B -> DPM C) safeguard have been enabled for versatility in long-distance security.
