How to Change Google Chrome’s New Tab page

Google AppsGoogle is always changing their products and services and this is simply the nature of the tech industry. While it is true that any company that doesn’t develop likely won’t be around for long, sometimes the alterations don’t meet the approval of some users. A good example of this is the recent change to Chrome’s New Tab page.

The New Tab page on Google Chrome currently shows a big Google Search bar along with the most popular pages you visit. This change, aimed at the majority of Internet users who use Google Search, isn’t great for app users. However, you can still access your apps by pressing the Apps icon below the URL bar in your browser. You can also hit the nine squares at the top-left of the New Tabs page.

If you are not a fan of the New Tab page on Google, there is a way you can actually revert to the old layout. This can be done by:

  1. Opening a new tab in Chrome by pressing CTRL + N or the tab button beside an open tab.
  2. Entering chrome://flags into the address bar.
  3. Searching for Enable Instant Extended APIs.
  4. Pressing the arrow beside Default and selecting Disabled.
  5. Restarting your browser.

If you use apps but also like the new search bar, try reverting and entering your search in the URL bar. As you may know, when you enter a term in the URL bar without the ‘www. and .com’ and hit Enter, Chrome will take you to the Google search for what you have written. That way you can have both your apps and a Google Search bar (technically the URL bar) in the same place.
